Conformation of the territory

The territory is characterized to the west by the chain mountain range of the Apennines , east by the low and sandy coast on the sea Adriatic, and perpendicularly by a series of valleys (whose section transverse is generally a few kilometers), where rivers and streams flow not particularly long nor rich in water, interrupted by sweets hills that slope down towards the sea.

The coast and the valleys are strongly urbanized, the hills are characterized by medieval villages, while the mountain areas are full of tiny hamlets in continuous demographic decline.

Mountains and peaks

The orographic structure of our region is characterized by the presence of the Sibillini Mountains, the Monti della Laga and the Massiccio del Gran Sasso, all part of the Apennine chain; therr are numerous peaks that exceed 2000 meters of altitude.

Rivers and streams

The main rivers flowing in the provinces of Ascoli Piceno and Teramo are, from north to south, Aso, Tesino, Tronto, Salinello, Tordino, Vomano , Piomba e Fino (with their respective tributaries); there are also minor waterways which flow directly into the Adriatic Sea, including Menocchia, Albula, Vibrata.

They are characterized by a torrential regime, therefore, in the rainy periods (autumn-winter) there are notable floods, followed by lean periods at the summer season. Tthe mouths of the rivers are in estuary that do not protrude significantly from the general profile of the coast.

Lakes

In our area there are few, small lakes and in most cases they are artificial basins generated by barrages for hydroelectric and irrigation use.

Along the Aso river there are two artificial reservoirs: the Gerosa dam with one storage capacity of about 12 million cubic meters. of water and the artificial lake of La Pera (422 mt. S.l.m.) with a capacity of about 700 thousand cubic meters.

The Castellano stream has two barriers: one near Vignatico where it forms the lake of Talvacchia (capacity 14 million cubic meters) and one near the medieval village of Castel Trosino where it forms the lake of Castel Trosino (capacity 0.4 million cubic meters) .

On the slopes of Monte Vettore, it is reached through mountain trails the lake of Pilato.

Sea and coasts

The coasts are on the Adriatic Sea; the province of Ascoli Piceno stretches from Marina di Massignano to the Sentina area in San Benedetto del Tronto for about 23,5 km; the province of Teramo extends from Martinsicuro in Silvi for a total of km. 45,2

The coast is characterized by a shallow and sandy bottom, mostly protected by cliffs; mouths of rivers, streams and ditches are frequent.
